Disco(nnect)
‘90s corporate meets ‘90s leisure at SXSW with Yahoo and Poolsuite.
This SXSW activation invited guests to revisit the days of logging off and escaping the Internet. Playing off ‘90s retro themes and early Internet nostalgia, TPD worked with Yahoo and Poolsuite to create a cohesive space that felt like a day-to-night vacation. Beginning with a daytime pool party and ending with a nighttime disco, Disco(nnect) gave guests some much-needed leisure time.
The Great Logging Off
To create the ultimate escape from the Internet, TPD transformed the poolside of Austin’s Hotel Van Zandt with tropical florals, furniture, and ‘90s-themed food and beverage items, including a custom floppy disk coaster. A stack of retro TVs enhanced the vibe, while digital screens at the DJ booths played atmospheric video produced by TPD to set the scene. Content included old Yahoo commercials alongside vintage-inspired corporate and leisure footage.
Immersive Gifting
A Vacation vending machine offered all the poolside essentials, including beach hats, sunscreen, and custom co-branded fragrance. Guests were given a business card upon entry with a code to redeem a free item from the vending machine, as well as custom co-branded T-shirts with matching ‘90s-themed signage.
Corporate Headshots
Guests channeled their inner ‘90s corporate worker with a themed photo booth that featured a selection of wigs, vintage jackets, oversized blazers, glasses, office supplies, and ‘90s-era tech for countless costume options. After securing the shot, guests received their very own “International Internet Card,” printed within minutes and featuring their headshot and name.
At night the space transformed into a DJ-fueled dance club. The photobooth shifted to offer group shots at the disco.
Set the stage
To suit the nighttime event theme, video assets on large LED screens shifted for each DJ set. Retro-inspired animations, featuring the Disco(nnect) and DJ logos, paired with vintage club footage to suit the club atmosphere.
